50 Hands…. 25 Boxes

Posted: December 27, 2015 in Uncategorized

6 Hands Collaborative invited 25 South Florida Artists to each create an original work of art using a plain wooden box. Each participating artist was given a set of identical random objects to incorporate into their vision for their box. Artists were required to select a minimum of 5 of these objects in the execution of the artwork. The result is called “The Box Project” in which all 25 boxes are exhibited together as part of 6 Hands debut exhibit, “The Art of Collaborative Art” at Art Gallery 21 in Wilton Manors. Opening Reception is January 8th, 2015, 7-9pm.

Playing in the Streets

DSC_0533 Last December, 6 Hands Collaborative took a field trip downtown to gather imagery for our next collaboration, Urban Landscapes. Equipped with only brayers and black ink, we collected rubbings on paper and canvas of drain grates, sewer covers, deteriorating walls, signage, benches and much more, “documenting” the textures and “ruins” of the historic district.

Back in the studio, we have been tearing, piecing and sewing our images together to create this new series. We’re also creating individual works from our collective images, translating these textures on our own and together.  We’ve been excited to see the evolution of our shared vision transpire through this adventure. 01bf4ba72510d6ff2368b620a714a7dc25a4bc96c9

Channeling Rauschenberg

In discussing what our third project would be, it was quickly agreed that we would try to work in fiber.  Upon further conversation, about vintage textiles, image transfers and sheer layers, all three of us established “like Rauschenberg”.  Prior to our studio day, we gathered our photos, text and images to transfer, compiled scraps of old fabrics and looked at images of Rauschenberg’s collages, assemblages and combines for inspiration.

Upon sharing our various materials and resources at the studio, our collaboration was immediately validated by the fact that Janet’s photos and Andrea’s prints on fabric had the exact same motif of an industrial metal grate. Deborah brought a huge volume on Rauschenberg’s work, from which we agreed on which pieces really spoke to us. By the end of the day, we had not one, but two art pieces, for which we gleaned inspiration and guidance from channeling the works of Robert Rauschenberg.

Our first exhibition as an art collaborative is a huge one…. our altered book, “Forged and Forbidden” will be exhibited in the “Life is Art” booth #S801 at Spectrum Miami 2014.  The theme of Spectrum this year is “Interplay- Artist Collaborations” which was just begging for our participation. Here is preview of the work. We look forward to seeing you at Spectrum during Art Basel week in Midtown Miami!
